Science Progression

PSQM

As a result of our work and commitment to improving science teaching, learning and opportunities in our school, we achieved the PSQM award.
As we continue to develop our own science curriculum further whilst now extending our outreach support, we are currently completing the PSQM Outreach programme.

As the lead school in the Heywood Ogden Trust alliance, our school has many opportunities to engage with other local schools in frequent collaborative events, including a KS1 Phyzi-Olympics and KS2 Great Science Share.

It allows our children to share their learning, complete challenges and connect with others. It supports growth, confidence and mastery in scientific knowledge and skills.

CREST Award

Our Science Ambassadors have completed their Superstar CREST award. Through completing this programme, it allowed the Science Ambassadors to develop their independence, teamwork and leadership skills. They now complete some science support, working with our youngest children along with representing our school at science events.
Have a look on our Science Ambassador page to see what we’ve been up to.

High School Links

Our Year 6 had the opportunity to complete a STEM day at a local high school. This gave them the chance to meet others their age, experience being in a high school setting and also have a fantastic day engaging in science challenges.

Some of our Year 3 and 4 children had the opportunity to visit The University of Manchester to take part in an Engineering Masterclass.

They learnt the stages of being an engineer, did some tinkering and exploring of creations we use everyday, learning how they work below the surface. Then they got the chance to create their own scribble robot design and prototype.

Our children experience many trips during their time at Hopwood to support and enhance their learning of science, including Blackpool zoo, Smithells Farm and Magna Science Museum. We also have visitors in school, such as Wonderdome to learn about space.

Class Assemblies

Each class performs a class assembly to their families across the academic year. This is a great opportunity to showcase their learning to parents which also aids with reinforcing learning and embedding knowledge.
