Achievosaurs
We encourage the children to be Achievosaurs, and through play, they become effective and motivated learners. At Hopwood, there are seven Achievosaurs all together, each linking to an aspect of the Characteristics of Effective Learning. The aim is for the learning dinosaurs to encourage the children to remain effective and motivated and give them the appropriate language to be able to explain the skills they use while learning.
The Achievosaurs are as follows:
Maths
Ten Town is an award-winning numeracy resource we use alongside Power Maths in Reception. Created specifically for the early years, it focuses on building strong basic number skills. Ten Town offers an exciting range of online content along with the opportunity to apply the knowledge in practical activities that encourage learning through play.
Maths Activities
Phonics
Read Write Inc. Phonics is a DfE-validated systematic synthetic phonics programme with a whole school approach to teaching early reading and writing, designed to ensure progress for every child. At Hopwood, children learn to read sounds and blend them into words. They apply this phonic knowledge to read and comprehend Storybooks that are carefully matched to the sounds they know.
The aim of Read Write Inc. Phonics is for children to learn to read early. The children also learn how to form letters using mnemonics to help them and learn to spell correctly using their Fred fingers.
Outdoor Learning
At Hopwood Primary School we recognise the valuable role that learning outdoors has on developing happy, healthy children. We love taking our learning outside and all children access daily Outdoor Learning opportunities.
We have a lovely outdoor area including an exciting climbing frame,
Tapestry
At Hopwood, we use Tapestry to build a very special record of a child’s experience, development and learning journey through their early years. Using photos, videos, and diary entries, teachers and parents ‘weave’ the story of the child and how they are growing and developing. Parents are able to view their child’s progress, the activities provided for them, and how much fun they’re having, whilst also uploading their own comments and media.
Year 6 buddies
At the start of the year, to help our new Reception children feel welcome, each Reception child is matched with a Year 6 child. Throughout the year, they meet up to take part in different activities including planting seeds, and reading stories.
Just before half term the children got to meet their buddies and spend some time with them. They made fruit kebabs together and did some leaf rubbings.
Our Autumn Walk
The reception children went for a walk around the park to look at season changes and to collect leaves for our art work.
