From Reception to year 6 the children at Hopwood learn to speak Spanish. Once the children are in key stage 2 they build on the language they have already acquired and learn how to read and write in Spanish. By the time a child reaches year 6, they look at sentence structures to develop their understanding of the language. Class teachers regularly reinforce the vocabulary taught by using their working walls and incorporate this during the school day. We use games, songs and practical activities to engage the children and the use of repetition in this way reinforces the new vocabulary learnt. We cover a wide range of topics such as numbers, colours, animal, food and places. Children progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary organised around these topics. All of these approaches help to equip our children with the skills to be confident global citizens.
