Maths is an adventure for children to be immersed in, get creative with, make mistakes, and conquer. At Hopwood, we are teaching maths using a mastery approach; this sparks curiosity and excitement and helps nurture children’s confidence in maths. We also deliver a same day intervention for children; this is to address any misconceptions picked up during the lesson.
We use Times Tables Rock Stars across the school as we believe that it is important that all children have rapid recall of times tables. This game challenges children on age relevant multiplication and division facts and it allows children practise and compete with their peers across the school.
We also have Maths Passports. Our Maths Passports are designed to support children in understanding and recalling important maths facts and concepts they need to know. There are specific passports for each year group. Children work on these passports throughout the year in class and at home. It is very important that children are fluent and confident using their own year group skills and that these are consolidated and practised regularly.
We have further support intervention groups that address specific areas of weakness for targeted children. Third Space is an intervention that we use for pupil premium children and any children who are working below age related expectations. This intervention is to target areas that children need extra support with and to fill specific mathematical gaps.
