At Hopwood Primary School, the science curriculum focuses on real life application, making science relatable and most importantly fun. Lessons allow children to not only learn about the topic, but become immersed in the area to develop natural curiosity. Children are encouraged to generate their own questions for enquiry. Every topic provides opportunities for children to conduct investigations, find out how scientists learn and discover. Each year group also has a STEM topic within the curriculum, this links science learning to technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. Making these connections embeds their learning in the real world and develops children’s skills at working and thinking scientifically.
Our curriculum topics are enhanced with visits from professionals in STEM-related fields and through our links with the Ogden trust. Science shows and off site learning to scientific based places e.g. Eureka, MOSI and Magma also encourage a love of science for our pupils. The children also have opportunities to show case their learning and learn from peers in inter-school events such as the Science Olympics and the regional Great Science Share.
Our quality teaching and learning of science has resulted in us achieving the PQSM (Primary Quality Science Mark).
